THE HILLS OF SAGRANTINO

The creation of the D.O.C. Montefalco appellation in 1979 was made possible also thanks to Giorgio Lungarotti’s contribution. Mindful of this, when many other producers began to invest in far-away wine areas, we decided to remain within our own land, the Umbria region, of which we have a deep knowledge in terms of climate, soil, environment, and our people. Indeed, we are firmly convinced that a wine must be an expression of the land in which it originates and our territory is Umbria!

So in the year 2000 we purchased 20 hectares in the area and planted vineyards for producing Sagrantino, Montefalco Rosso, Sagrantino Passito and a Grappa Riserva di Sagrantino.

The winery is in Turrita di Montefalco and the cellars are completely underground, with grape loading and vinification using gravity and a natural control of ambient temperature. On the ground floor, surrounded by vineyards, is a villa with antique architecture and a 360° view of the Umbra Valley that can be admired from the spacious Salone delle feste, an ideal location for weddings, dinners, concerts, conferences and, of course, parties.

The environmental awareness at the basis of  Lungarotti’s operations in Torgiano – where renewable energy is produced from vine pruning residues – is expressed in Montefalco as the choice to produce organically: the wines here will be certified as organic from the 2014 harvest, after the three

years required for conversion.

Visits and tastings are by appointment; it is also possible to organize brunches and dinners in the vineyards.
